St. Telemachus was a Christian monk who lived during the late Roman Empire. According to historical accounts, he traveled to Rome and witnessed a gladiatorial fight in the Colosseum. Horrified by the violence, Telemachus leapt into the arena and tried to stop the combat, urging the crowd to end the bloodshed. His actions angered the spectators, and he was stoned to death on the spot. His martyrdom deeply impacted Emperor Honorius, who soon issued a decree banning gladiatorial games, marking a turning point in ending this brutal practice. At his left is the Roman Colosseum where he died. At his right is the sword and spears of gladiators who he saved. He stands in the middle of the rocks with which he was stoned to death.
