Ragnar Volarus of Red Rising

This piece is a full character sculpt inspired by Ragnar Volarus from Pierce Brown’s Red Rising saga, interpreted through my own visual and stylistic lens. The goal was to capture the immense physical presence, ritualistic markings, and mythic warrior aesthetic that define the Obsidian culture, while pushing the sculpt toward a bold, statuesque silhouette.

The character was sculpted entirely in ZBrush, with an emphasis on strong anatomical structure, dramatic proportions, and clean, readable forms. Particular attention was given to the contrast between broad, powerful musculature and the finer surface details—such as the braided beard, facial markings, and engraved tattoos—that communicate status, heritage, and story.

The tattoo work and symbols were sculpted to feel carved into the skin rather than simply overlaid, reinforcing the idea of ritual and permanence. Hard-surface elements like the belt emblem and blades were designed to complement the organic forms without overpowering them, blending a brutal, utilitarian weapon design with ceremonial motifs.

Lighting and presentation were kept stylized to emphasize silhouette and depth, allowing the forms and surface detail to read clearly from a distance while still rewarding closer inspection. This sculpt was created as a character-focused personal project, driven by a love for the source material and a desire to explore heroic-scale fantasy anatomy and design.
